About Uxbridge Lions

The Uxbridge and District Lions Club was chartered in April 1974 and is part of the world-wide Lions Clubs international.  We are celebrating 50 years of service in our community in 2024.

Our club is made of dedicated men and women who meet regularly to spend time to work on projects that help members of our community, our region, our province, our country and around the world.

Our Lions Club serves the community of Uxbridge and is part of Lions Club International, dedicated to improving life quality globally through focuses such as diabetes, environment, hunger, vision, humanitarian, and disaster relief.

The “We Serve” motto is our mantra for everything our Club does by donating to various non-profit and charitable organizations in our community. Those donations have always been made without fanfare, resulting in peoples’ limited awareness to the extent of Lions’ generosity.  We collect pull tabs off of cans for which the aluminum they are made from goes towards a wheelchair for someone in need.  We collect unused prescription glasses that go towards providing a optical mission in developing countries.  Learn more about donating pull tabs and glasses on our Donation page.

We are proud to have completed work on a Universal Accessible Playground in Elgin Park in collaboration with the Township of Uxbridge and through your donations and donations from other community service groups.  This accessible playground will be the first of its kind in the Uxbridge area.  Our club has been honoured to receive an accessibility award from Durham Region because of this project.

We invite you to volunteer for our ongoing initiatives. Your suggestions for areas needing extra support in our community are highly valued. Review our website for more about our work,  and contact us to discuss potential service opportunities.

About Lions  Clubs International

Lions Clubs International was established in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois by a gentleman named Melvin Jones.  The headquarters is currently in Oak Brook, Illinois.  Mr. Jones believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons from purely professional concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large.  For a concise history of Lions Clubs International, click here

There are currently 50,000 clubs world-wide with 1.4 million Lions Club members in over 200 countries.  This makes Lions Clubs International the largest volunteer organization in the world.  In 1945, Lions Clubs International was invited by the United Nations to draft the United Nations Charter in San Francisco, California and has supported the work of the United Nations ever since then.

The objective of each Lions Club is to serve the community - neighbour helping neighbour.  It did not take long before  this simple, yet broad ideal spread throughout the world.

The first Lions Club in Canada was chartered in Windsor, Ontario in 1920 and clubs across Canada have chartered since then.  Currently there are 1,390 clubs with over 33,000 club members in Canada.

LCI Causes
Uxbridge & District Lions Club is part of Lions Clubs International serving our community and working with other clubs to make a difference in communities around the world.

Uxbridge Lions Club's Causes

Much of the focus of Lions Clubs International work as a service club organization is to raise money for worthy causes.  All funds raised by Lions Clubs from the general public are used for charitable purposes, and administrative costs are kept strictly separate and paid for by members.  In Uxbridge, the money raised for a club's charity account goes toward projects that benefit local non-profit and charitable organizations.

Our Uxbridge & District Lions Club provides services and support in our community as follows:

Diabetes:  Uxbridge & District Lions Club supports D Camps, Camp Huronda in particular by annual donation from fundraising.

Environment:  Uxbridge & District Lions Club participates in the spring and fall clean-ups of Toronto Street from Sixth Concession to Tim Horton's store with Adopt-a-Road.

Vision:  Uxbridge & District Lions Club collects used eye glasses, vision and hearing devices and does free Vision Screening in local elementary schools.

Hunger:  Uxbridge & District Lions  Club supports Loaves & Fishes Food Bank by annual donation through fundraising and has its Christmas Baskets Project to gift needy local families with a healthy Christmas meal, as well as gifts.
